Ever since I started watching racing it is drummed in by the experts that a filly picking up black type is incredibly important. So some Green Desert mare falls into 3rd place in a 7 runner Warwick listed race, does this mean she is significantly more likely to produce a decent horse than a solid 80 rated Green Desert mare? I doubt it very much and yet owners/agents will pay a premium for the offspring of the first mare. There is no real difference in the performance of the 2 horses. Indeed the listed placed may only be 10lb better on Official Ratings, which could easily be explained by factors such as: stud where it was raised, trainer, foal age etc. None of these factors which can explain the small difference in ability are passed on in the genetics, so why pay the black type premium? Both of these mares in the example are a long long way short of the elite performer. Reply
