I see over the next few days the New Zealand Yearling Sales will be held in Karaka.
PREMIER SALE ? 31st January to 1st February
    SELECT SALE ? 2nd to 4th February
    FESTIVAL SALE ? 6th to 7th Febuary
Can someone please explain the different category of Yearlings selling in each Session. Am I right to presume the BEST are in the middle SELECT session ?

The Premier is meant to be the creme de la creme, but the middle group (the Select) is often the catalogue that produces some real gems. Reply

Thanks - I should have worked out that "Premier" comes first (!) but then it could have meant first of three sessions. Bit weird though that the "Select" is not the best - they should rename that session Second-Choice. Reply

This sale was identified many years ago by champion Australian trainer and 'Cups King' Bart Cummings as a souces of premier bloodstock and is now increasingly recognised as a must for serious purchases of bloodstock in Australasia. Stats tell us New Zealand Bloodstock has sold 21% of the yearlings auctioned in Australasia over the last 5 years, yet they have claimed 40% of the Group I winning graduates in the last 4 seasons. Last year alone, they had 23 Group 1 winning graduates that won 27 Group 1 events..PREMIER SALE produced 10, SELECT SALE produced 9, FESTIVAL SALE produced 1. Historically, the PREMIER SALE presents the best sires, best dams, best dam lines, and best conformed yearlings which are organized, arranged and showcased to attract the biggest buyers and sell at the highest prices, and this has been successfully accomplished each year. Averages for yearlings SOLD at the 3 designated sales are: 2009 PREMIER..366-av of $145,710 2009 SELECT..456-av of $37,566 2009 FESTIVAL..375-av of $11,997 2010 PREMIER..362-av of $181,557 2010 SELECT..483-av of $52,346 2010 FESTIVAL..328-av of $14,487 Reply

Very slow progress for vendors methinks (watched a fair bit live on tv) with a lot of pass ins it seemed to me (but I'll have to check that out). A better pedigreed lot on day 2 today so maybe it might be ok (but it seems that quite a few vendors will be disappointed with the results Rolling Eyes ) Reply

Platypus, you've got an overdose of Cambridge Stud on yr brain......... NO high Chaps were consigned by Cambridge Stud - nearly all the High Chaps were consigned by Windsor Park Stud (where High Chap stood) and they reaped their reward. Platypus, your name is aussie water creature, so if yr an Orstralian, then you are fully excused Wink Reply
