2 foals which was not much of a sample and they were very different.

Lot 1070 Lightning Spear ex Riccoche.
Late April foal and looked it. Smallish and immature. Very narrow across the front and subsequently very close (base narrow) in front at the walk. Slightly long in the pastern but good angle and matched shoulder well. Very open at the knee, Nice hind leg and generally well proportioned. Good walker, feet OK maybe slight turn out. My general impression was in spite of all the obvious faults it was an honest foal that would probably mature well and grow into a reasonable yearling.

Lot 1141 Lightning Spear ex Starlit Sky
Late February foal well grown , tall even a bit leggy. Good bone maybe also a little bit narrow across the front but not as pronounced as the previous foal. Good walk. Pasterns OK again nice hind leg and well quartered. General impression nice enough foal and from a good family (Royal Studs) looks as though she may take a bit of time but plenty to like. As she is out of a Galileo mare you might expect her to be a rangy sort of filly and she is.

My rates are so cheap anyway. I didn't hang about long it is not the same without being able to socialise. Picked up a potential client though. Happy Days. Reply

The second one 1141 looks to have some merit in her pedigree as well duplicating Nijinsky and therefore Flaming page again. Reply

Certainly my pick of the two but the other one sold well enough given the issues with its knees. I was put off by his lack of precocity but there is nothing in his pedigree to indicate that he would be a slow burner I wanted to talk to David Simcock who trained him but unusually I just haven't bumped into him recently. Maybe he was just a really lazy beggar. Reply

    LS or DS?? Reply

Good question RP. I was thinking about LS but you may have some special insight. Actually I have found DS to be helpful and transparent in the past and one of the more likeable Newmarket trainers. Reply

Thanks TOTH for the insight on his foals. I’m expecting one this year, don’t know if the mare suits him, time will tell. Reply

No problems Dargent! I would have wanted to see a few more before making a decision about him. The narrowness in front could be a concern but its hardly a game changer is it. I wouldn't be too hard on a foal who is that way there is plenty of time for them to come right. Reply
