Aidan O'Brien had a great start to racing at Leopardstown today. He trained the winners of the first four races. Not only that, he won both Gr 3 races and in the 5 runner Derrinstown Derby Trial he had 3 of the 5 runners and finished first, second and third. He did have a sad time too because his hot favourite in the fifth race pulled up when cruising in the straight and was fatally injured.
What it does tell us is that racing in Ireland in the 'important' races where there will be basically no overseas runners, could become boring. Having said that, today in the second race - a 3-y-o maiden 10fur, there were 19 runners O'Brien had five of them and he finished first, second, third, fourth and seventh! However, his hot fav got beat by one of his others. Luckily, we dont have the same system as in France where all runners by the same trainers and/or owners are coupled.
