Have come accross this thing in a book about the large heart characteristic in racehorses. The theory is that the large heart characteristic is carried by a gene on the X chromosome which a father can only transmit to a daughter. i.e. if a sire has a large heart then he can only pass this on through his female offspring.

Eclipse was said to have had a 14lb heart, it is thought that he passed this on to Phar Lap - whom had a 14lb heart also - through Phar Lap's dam line.

Secretariat's heart was estimated to be 22lbs and the theory put forward was that the large heart was passed on to his daughters making the female offspring much more successful racers than his male offspring.

Genetics seems to me to be a vast and complex area which I don't know much about.

Has anyone else heard of this? What are your views?
