Yesterdays Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Gr 2 gave a 1-2-3 for Aidan O'Brien runners and a great result for Ballydoyle Stables who took home ?76,163-79 of the total race prizemoney of ?78,620-69. Yes all but ?2,456-90 went to Ballydoyle owners.
The winner is the winner and that is fair enough but the horses that finished fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh were firmly put in their place by the O'Brien second and third. This type of result surely devalues the form of Irish Racing. O'Brien is doing nothing wrong - in fact the opposite, he is brilliant - but when our other top trainers are unable to beat O'Briens 'also rans' it makes the value and prestige of the Group 2 look like a Ballydoyle work-out.
Next Wedenesday at Naas, a Gr 3 for fillies (3 y-o+) has 22 fillies still left in at the forfeit stage. O'Brien trains NINE of those fillies. There will be Black Type for the first three home. I am beginning to think that Aidan O'Brien is just too good, too successful - for the good of Irish Racing. Any comments?
