An interesting table in the TDN today, the median price of yearlings verses the cost of producing them. Most of them make a rather large loss and I was quite surprised by this. Obviously it would have been good to compare it to the the figure for the market as a whole to see if you were doing better or worse with a first season sire. I had always assumed you would be doing a fair bit better but this table doesn't look great to me. Is it really worth using cheap 1st season sires? Most of them will fail so not only do you lose money you downgrade your mare as well. Am I missing something? Why is Monsieur Bond for example gettable for a couple of grand (and not getting many mares) after producing plenty of good horses and G1 winners? (I don't want to get into MB he is just an example) and these moderate 1st season sires getting 100+ mares for much more money? Reply
