Its really a continuation of the thread that was running a few weeks ago, but yesterdays Ebor handicap, a race for slow old horses over a trip that bears no relevance to breeding class and would be a blot on any stallion’s cv was worth 311K to the winner. It is proposed to increase the value of the race next year to 1 million.
There were several Group races yesterday and it stuck me how messed up the pattern has become when there were four Group3 races run all worth staggeringly different amounts. The Strensall Stakes was worth a little shy of 57K. The City of York Stakes 102K. The Prestige Stakes 28K. The Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor was worth 34K. The G2 Celebration mile was worth 70K.
If prizemoney is supposed to reflect the class of the race then the pattern grades are obviously completely useless. If the Grades are supposed to represent a level of ability the rewards are completely skewed.
One thing is absolutely clear the race planners don’t have a clue. There is no longer a structure which you can rely on to establish a ‘base’ form line in order to be able to select a stallion or grade a mare.
The racecourse test is the only test that matters and it needs to be re-established without delay.
