Blood Horse reports that dual US Classic winner and former top stallion Thunder Gulch died at his home at Coolmore's Ashford Stud on Monday due to the infirmities of old age. He was 26. Owned by Michael Tabor, Thunder Gulch was crowned Eclipse Champion 3YO Male of 1995 following his wins in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes that year. He also won the Gr1 Florida Derby and Gr1 Travers Stakes in a dominant 3YO season. Retiring from stud duties in 2015, Thunder Gulch (Gulch-Line of Thunder, by Storm Bird) stood for 17 seasons and according to Arion Pedigrees is the sire of 84 individual stakes winners worldwide. His best progeny was six-time Gr1 winner Point Given, who was crowned US Horse of the Year and Champion 3YO male in 2001 after winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. In Australia, his best runners were dual Gr1 winner Tempest Morn, Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder, and Gr1 Toorak Handicap winner Shot Of Thunder. "It is a very sad day for us here at Ashford as Thunder Gulch has been a pleasure to be around all these years and has left a major legacy at the farm as the first champion sire to reside here," said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan. "He had a remarkable 3-year-old campaign in the hands of Wayne Lukas and Gary Stevens...He was an incredibly tough and genuine horse on the track and we are very grateful to the Tabor's for entrusting us with his stud career."
