Following a recent outbreak of the EHV-1 virus in the stable of trainer Jean-Claude Rouget which decimated the early part of Almanzor's four-year-old season, it has been decided by connections that he will be retired from racing, reports thoroughbreddailynews.com. Sylvain Vidal made the announcement on behalf of part-owner Gerard Augustin-Normand. "After consultations with Jean-Claude Rouget and the partners, we have come to the difficult decision to retire Almanzor", Vidal advised. "We came into the year with great hopes and expectations for a successful campaign culminating in glory in the [G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe]. Unfortunately with the setback he has had, including the virus spread through the stable earlier this year, it is apparent that he would not be fit enough to challenge for the Arc this year." The Cartier Champion three-year-old of last season, Almanzoor was a dominant two-year-old with a win in the Gr3 Prix de Guiche which catapulted him on a streak which included victories in the Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club, Gr2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano, Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes and Gr1 Champion Stakes. Certifying his undeniable shot at this year's Arc, his final two wins saw him defeat 2016 Arc winner Found. Vidal added, "We all remember his three Group 1 wins at three including his amazing finish in the Irish Champion Stakes. The best horse in Europe in 2016 with a rating of 126, he has huge potential as a stallion. Decisions regarding his career at stud will be made and announced at a later date." Reply
