Cornerstone Stud’s shuttle stallion Zebedee (Invincible Spirit) has a new superstar 2YO colt in Europe. With jockey William Buick wearing the famous old Robert Sangster silks of Manton Thoroughbreds, juvenile Barraquero ran out an impressive winner of the Gr2 Richmond Stakes (1200m) at the Glorious Goodwood festival overnight, and has come into genuine calculations for next year’s 2000 Guineas and Commonwealth Cup. A 6-length Chepstow winner at just his second start after placing behind subsequent Vintage Stakes winner Expert Eye on debut, Barraquero took the next step in his debut Group outing to defeat rivals that included July Stakes winner Cardsharp, Superlative Stakes runner-up Nebo, as well as Royal Ascot Coventry Stakes runner-up Headway. The win emulated the feat of Zebedee’s previous Richmond S. winner Ivawood. Trainer Brian Meehan said, “I’d think it was odds-on he’d go for the Gr1 Prix Morny next.” Out of a mare by Oasis Dream, Barraquero is a third Gr2 winner for Zebedee who, in recent weeks, has reached 102 individual 2YO winners from just three and a half crops to race. Zebedee’s oldest Australian born crop are now yearlings, and averaged just over $52,000 at recent weanling sales. He stands for $16,500 at Cornerstone Stud in 2017. Reply
