In a situation that could barely be imagined for a mid-week meeting at an Australian metropolitan track, officials at California's prestigious Santa Anita Park have cancelled this coming Thursday's racemeeting due to a lack of support from trainers. Following less than 48 hours after the running of two major Gr1 events, bloodhorse.com reports that the Stronach Group-owned facility expressed disappointment at the poor fields carded after making their decision. Joe Morris, senior vice president of the Stronach Group for West Coast operations, was candidly blunt about racehorses stabled (for free) at Santa Anita, commenting, "It is called the racetrck. It's not the breaking track, so 2-year-olds and yearlings should be broke somewhere else. It's not the layup track, so if a horse needs some time off to get turned out or freshened up, it needs to happen elsewhere..." Leading trainer John Shirreffs, while frowning upon the draconian action, acknowledged the frustration of officials but pointed to similar small fields occurring at other major tracks with bigger horse populations. The trainer of former champion Zenyatta asked, "Don't you think honey is a little better than vinegar?"
