Despite ongoing suggestion that brilliant 2000 Guineas winning colt Churchill (Galileo-Meow, by Storm Cat) would likely stretch his speed to the testing English Derby circuit, trainer Aidan O'Brien has seemingly intervened to announce that he will instead vie for the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh this Saturday, reports racingpost.com. Despite his absence from Derby reckoning, it is still feasible that O'Brien will saddle seven runners in the Derby, with Cliffs Of Moher his current number one seed. O'Brien commented further on his decision to bypass the Derby with Churchill: "It looks like Churchill will be going to the Curragh on Saturday, and that Winter [English 1,000 Guineas winner] will run in the Irish 1,000 Guineas on Sunday. Both are in good form." O'Brien has completed the English-Irish 2000 Guineas double on three previous occasions, with Rock of Gibraltar in 2002, followed by Henrythenavigator in 2008 and most recently with Gleneagles in 2015.
