More doodles: A quick look at the December Foal Sales at Tatts I split the mares into five categories - non winners with no blacktype in first 2 generations, non winners with blacktype in 2 generations, winners with no blacktype in 2 generations, and winners with blacktype in 2 generations. Finally blacktype mares. So nonW/nonBT; nonW/BT; W/nonBT; W/BT; BTW

Of the top fifty prices on Day 2 (made 55,000+) the categories were
8% out of nonW/nonBT;
44% ex nonW/BT
10% ex W/nonBT
20% ex W/BT
18% Blacktype mares

This compares with the a sample of over 200 which failed to make 10k on first two days:
19% were out of nonW/nonBT
35% ex nonW/BT
21% ex W/nonBT
19% ex W/BT
6% ex Blacktype mares

Just a snapshot, but my impression is you would need to be clairvoyant to know "on paper" which mares would be rejected and which would command a premium. Hence the dream lives on and the numbers rarely perfectly match demand. It may seem that blacktype performers are safer (top marks!) but I would say the opposite from this - many blacktype mares can also be rejected if they fail to produce a good specimen or stay around too long.

I would have bet that taking out the nonW/nonBT mares was sensible, then see four "white pages" in the top fifty.
