Meanwhile, the fairytale ending to California Chrome's career was not to be with the dual US Horse of the Year faded badly to finish ninth in Saturday's US$12 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup, reports Blood Horse. The 6YO, who is scheduled to depart for Taylor Made Farm in the next 24 hours to begin his stud career, was later diagnosed with fluid in his right knee. Trainer Art Sherman said California Chrome's ailment did not appear to be major, but added, if the issue persists, the chestnut would be examined by a veterinarian once he arrived at Taylor Farm on Sunday. "It looks like he scrambled away from there and couldn't get his footing," Sherman said. "It looked like he wasn't getting a hold of the racetrack, like maybe his feet were getting out from under him. I don't know why. He worked good over it." Sherman added: "It's been an unbelievable journey with him, even in defeat. You have such a good run. Not every horse can keep the record up like he has." California Chrome retires as the richest North American racehorse of all time with a record of 16 wins - including 7 wins at Gr1 level - from 27 starts and US$14.5 million in prize money. Reply
