A striking dark bay filly by stallion heavyweight Medaglia d'Oro - the sire of champion fillies Rachel Alexandra and Songbird - emerged as the overall top-seller of the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Sale when she was knocked down to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for US$1.45 million at Saratoga Springs in New York on Tuesday. Consigned as Hip 191 by Craig Bandoroff's Denali Stud, the filly is out of the stakes-winning Thunder Gulch mare Whisper To Me making her a half-sister to Gr2 winner Overheard (Macho Uno). The filly hails from the extended female family of champion gallopers Chris Evert, Chief's Crown and Winning Colors. "She was the stand-out horse in the sale," said Pope. "She has an unbelievable amount of class." Offerings by three-time champion US sire Tapit proved popular, accounting for six of the sale's top 15 prices. Last year's champion freshman sire Uncle Mo and Medaglia d'Oro each had two among the top 15. Established sires Pioneerof the Nile, Ghostzapper, War Front, Malibu Moon, and Speightstown rounded out the remainder of the top 15. Over the two days of trade, 156 yearlings sold for a total of US$45,570,000 at an average price of US$292,115 and a median of US$237,500. Twenty-nine horses sold for US$500,000 or more, up from 26 last year. Reply
