Two-time champion North American sire Tapit (Pulpit-Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled) took his career earnings past US$100 million when his son Cupid won the Gr2 Indiana Derby on Saturday, reports Blood Horse. The Gainesway stallion achieved the milestone with nine crops of racing age. Tapit set a US progeny earnings record of US$16.8 million when he became leading sire for the first time in 2014, before breaking the record last year with US$18.4 million. He sits on top of the sires table this year with US$11.6 million. "Tapit is no stranger to remarkable achievements as a sire, whether it's on the racetrack or in the sales ring," said Ian Tapp, sales and bloodstock development manager at Gainesway in Kentucky. "Tapit is coming off a year when his yearlings averaged $615,000 and the mares in foal to him averaged $1.5 million." He added: "So when you consider the crops that are still in the pipeline, it's obvious that crossing the $100 million mark in progeny earnings is going to be just another footnote to Tapit's incredible career." Tapit - who commands an elite stallion's fee of US$300,000 - has been limited to a book of 135 this year. Reply
