A trainer in Sydney has been disqualified for two years because he attempted to stomach tube a horse before a race. Here is the article I read:

"Rosehill trainer Greg Mcfarlane was disqualified for two years while his stable employee Carmen Hepburn was given a 12-month disqualification for attempting "to stomach tube Ferocimo" on a Rosehill raceday in July.
Racing NSW stewards resumed the inquiry on Thursday into Mcfarlane and Hepburn's actions when they were caught by racecourse detective Albert Gardner with a tube in the nose of Ferocimo prior to its scheduled run in the P & E Avellino 50th Anniversary Handicap at Rosehill on July 6.

During the resumed hearing, Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory General Manager Mr John Keledjian gave evidence that testing "of the liquid in a bucket" confiscated from the stall of Ferocimo was "consistent with the presence of the alkalising agent bicarbonate".

Urine and blood samples taken from the galloper following the raid were found to be "negative" to any illegal levels or substances.

Mcfarlane pleaded guilty to attempting "to stomach tube Ferocimo with a liquid which contained the alkalising agent bicarbonate" prior to a race engagement later that day at Rosehill.

In assessing penalty, stewards took into account "Mcfarlane was penalised for a breach of the prohibited substance rules" previously.

Stewards issued an 18-month penalty for the indiscretion, backdated to start on July 7.

Mcfarlane also pleaded guilty to an addition four charges of "hindering stewards and officials in the exercise of their powers and duties" following the initial stable raid.

Stewards issued another penalty of six months disqualification, to be served cumulatively, extending Mcfarlane's disqualification until July 6, 2015.

Hepburn was found guilty by stewards of "holding the head of Ferocimo" while Mcfarlane attempted to stomach tube Ferocimo prior to its race engagement at Rosehill.

Stewards issued the minimum penalty of 12 months for the indiscretion. Hepburn's disqualification ends on August 29"

Maybe I am very nieve or just plain ignorant, but can someone please explain to me WHAT the trainer was doing - what are the effects of bicarbonate ?
