Pedigree matters No5 Nathaniel

By Champion sire Galileo who is working with mares from a very wide variety of backgrounds. Nathaniel was very effective over 12 furlongs probably on most ground but not necessarily extremes of either soft or fast. Won a strong renewal of the King George and Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes entirely on merit, beating Workforce (previous years record breaking Derby winner). Ran well on final start 2011 in the 10 furlong Champion Stakes over trip probably too short. Nathaniel was 5th beaten not too far in a very fast run race by Cirrus Des Aigles in fractions significantly faster than Frankel had posted over 8 furlongs of the same course an hour earlier.

Nathaniels sire, Galileo has demonstrated strong affinities with mares with Northern Dancer in their pedigrees (62% of his stakes winners conform). He also has strong links with mares having Never Bend and Mill Reef in their make up.

An analysis of Nathaniel’s pedigree reveals that he is likely to display ‘similar’ but not necessarily identical characteristics.

What we learn every time we do this type of analysis is that not all Northern Dancer crosses are equal. Galileo is perhaps the most productive son of Sadler’s Wells and Montjeu probably the second. A cross between the two has resulted in a G1 winner Parish Hall and this will I am sure be enough to trigger numerous experiments in inbreeding to Sadler’s Wells.

I wouldn’t know how often it had been tried but my research reveals (Parish Hall aside), just how unsuccessful such inbreeding has been. There are only 6 Group winners that feature any inbreeding to Sadler’s Wells anywhere within 5 generations. It’s a spectacularly low % play at this time!

So which Northern Dancer lines do work or are likely to work with Nathaniel?

Danzig / Danehill is probably the most predictable. Its an extended affinity from Sadler’s Wells x Danehill. Frankel is of course a Galileo x Danehill cross! Camelot is a Montjeu X Danehill.

Another productive source might be Nureyev. He scores positively across Nathaniels pedigree and works particularly well with Silver Hawk.

The Raise A Native / Mr Prospector line looks promising too especially via Kingmambo, who has Nureyev in his pedigree, and Zafonic.

Like his sire Galileo, it is highly probable that Nathaniel will display a strong affinity with mares carrying Never Bend / Mill Reef / Shirley Heights / and particularly Darshaan.

Treasure Beach and Mikhail Glinka are both out of mares by Mark Of Esteem (x Darshaan) and Alandi and Midas Touch are both stakes winners by Galileo out of Darshaan mares.

Blushing Groom / Rainbow Quest should also be productive. Galikova the Prix Vermeille winner was by Galileo out of a Blushing Groom mare and Frankels 2nd dam was by Rainbow Quest.

Mares with Ahonoora / Indian Ridge might well excel too! You might expect such mares to be bred for more raw speed in a stallion but the formula with Galileo has worked on more than the odd occasion. Top mare Maybe’s 2nd dam is by Indian Ridge and Irish 1000gns winner Nightime is out of an Indian Ridge mare.
