John Osborne on upbeat New Year ahead: A January many of us are glad to emerge from met an unusual end around here. On January 31st there is a celebration of the dawn of Spring at the St Brigid’s Well, a holy shrine adjacent to us. Illuminated only by candle light, hundreds of people gathered to sing and chant a welcome for the new season, new life. The February 1st celebrations, for the feast of St. Brigid, on a beautifully bright Spring day brought local dignitaries to hear Luka Bloom sing “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Light That Shines Within You”. You probably realise by now that the Irish National Stud is unique!
Our students have arrived and have been through the basic training bootcamp. We have twenty-three students this year from seven countries and we will also host the Darley International Thoroughbred Internship students at our recently renovated lecture theatre. The lectures range from veterinary topics to racecourse management, from the breeding shed through to the sales. The students’ enthusiasm and energy are a great part of our Spring.
The ITBA awards night was another great success for the organisers and we were delighted that our former Chairman, Lady O’Reilly, was inducted into the ITBA Hall of Fame. A small token in return for the decades of positive influence.
There is a growing call for another Racing Post Yearling Bonus Scheme, which would be the fifth if we create a scheme for the 2013 yearlings. The scheme’s essence has been to channel the vendors contributions into a substantial bonus for the owner of the winner of selected races. While prize money deteriorates it has helped enhance the winning experience for many owners over the years. A decision on Scheme Five will be made definitively in the next two weeks.
